DAY 202: ‘If you are easily hurt by words, you’re not fit to fight in the ring’

It’s last week of the month this means it’s FIGHT TRAINING! Today, Pal puts his BEAST MODE on and we got a hell like training session. So basically, it’s hell week.

We started off class with really intensive ‘warm up’. Our shadow boxing session needs to done with speed and power and when Pal gives the command, we are to give 10 quick punches and continue shadow boxing. We then did 20 very slow push ups, 5 clap push ups, 20 slow squats, 5 tuck jumps and 10 jackknives (4sec up, 4 sec down). By the time we finished warm up, I was drenched.

Now that our arms and shoulders are sore, we learnt the combination for the day:
Jab, jab, cross, cover block against opponent left hook, immediate counter with cross then left hook.

We are to hit each other with the combination continuously, one for one, to get used to the movement. After that, one guy becomes the attacker and the other guy defends for 2 rounds. After the end of every round, we end it off with 50 punches and 20 knees.

After that, we are to group ourselves in groups of 4. My partner and I were called to train with some of the instructors as we are more senior. The exercise is really simple:

2 ‘Punchers’ 2 Pad mans
Combination on pads Hold the pads
Puncher face each other and hit each other with the combination, defender is supposed to defend. One for one 3X jump squats, X2round house, repeat till buzzer goes off

The round ends off with 50 punches and 20 roundhouses.

I was getting hit by Darren a lot by the counter crosses as I wasn’t retracting my hand fast enough after delivering the left hook. It was after forcing myself to be more mindful to retract my hand back faster that I was more able to block the crosses. Training with the coaches was fun today. It showed me how much I lacked in terms of skill and they really pushed and forced us to be better.

Did this for 2 rounds and then we ended off class with some conditioning.

One partner is supposed to kick the other with right roundhouse, left roundhouse, back leg push kick, front leg push kick while the other is supposed to defend the roundhouses with shin blocks and take the hit of the two push kicks.

We turned into Tigers after the training.
